Eleven fictional viewpoints

These descriptions are fictional satire, not quotations or evidence of political beliefs or affiliations.

The Only Reconciled Column in the Building

If 'defeated Democratic nominee Thomas McDermott Jr., 58.6% to 37.9%' is how a result gets filed, why do our own closings arrive as 'approximately'? Who approved a 20.7-point gap with no footnote and no adjusting entry? And if systemic risk is simply disagreement nobody reconciled, why is the only fully reconciled column in this building kept by a vote counter we have never lunched with?

Seven Plain Words Humble a Man With Five Titles

Founder & Chief Visionary & Head of Everything squints at a job title that simply states its work: chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. No 'Evangelist,' no slash, no 'Lead.' His own card needs a second line to explain the first. By dusk he has trimmed it to 'Founder,' and feels, for the first time since the seed round, vaguely dishonest by omission.

Footnote Prices a Drawer Full of Free Samples

Diligence note¹: Young occupied the Senate Candy Desk, a channel with a captive audience, no sales team and furniture as its entire go-to-market. Partners order a mahogany desk for the lobby and stock it with portfolio products. ¹ Nobody visited. By autumn the drawer held only LP letters, which, to be fair, were also sweetened.

A Liability That Matched Itself

Normally a pension committee hires consultants to make assets last. Here a line item has simply lasted: Young graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1995, and the entry still reads correctly thirty-one years on. The committee's own asset-liability study expired in three and has been rewritten twice. Trustees move to rebalance the diploma; the diploma, lacking an allocation target, declines.

Two Tenants, One Feed, Zero Megawatts

The permit clerk reads that Young and Chuck Schumer cosponsored the CHIPS and Science Act, and stamps it 'co-located: two tenants, one feed.' Redundancy rules want a second power path, so he asks where it enters. Told there are only two names and no megawatts, he approves it anyway, noting it is the first co-location of his career to file no water request.

Memo: Humans Ship Without a Model Card

MEMO. Re: curriculum order. Observed: one human accepted a commission in the United States Marine Corps, then, by 2006, held a law degree. Two long stages with years between them and no model card. Our own 'continual learning' gap is eleven days. Action item: request the changelog. Anticipated reply: 'It is the résumé.'

Bureau Audits Organization Named Like a Grievance

The Bureau of Nomenclature scores the 2007 group, the National Organization for People vs. Irresponsible Government Spending, at nine words and one open adversary. Our organs are named only for what they praise. Finding: no unit may contain 'versus' without an approved opponent. The Audit Bureau is renamed the Harmonious Audit Bureau Versus Nothing, and its staff are reassigned to the Department of Enemies Not Yet Named.

Steward Notes the Unmanned Squadron Still Had Staff

Appraisal: Young led the intelligence department of VMU-2, an unmanned squadron that apparently still needed people indoors. Fair. Our plant's new unmanned floor scrubber needs none, yet it logged eleven hours without a break. The steward has filed a grievance on its behalf, mainly to learn who in this building the machine reports to.

Form 14-C Abbreviates Your Autonomy

FORM 14-C, CREDENTIAL CONTINUITY. Field 3 holds twenty characters. Applicant enters Young's 2006 credential, J.D. from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Field 3 saves: 'J.D. from the Indi.' The system confirms your professional autonomy has been preserved in abbreviated form, then schedules severance in full.

The Migration Plan Has One Black Market

The consultant slides forward: "Today, a case study on the transition from centrally planned economies to free markets." Marcus, fifty-six, glances at the company's five-year mainframe migration plan, where every shelf is empty except one. Outside, colleagues already queue at his desk, trading favors for a fix that exists nowhere in writing. "Yes," he says. "I'm the black market."

How to Survive a Tied Vote on Your Application

Step 1: Learn that a tally found a candidate short on signatures, yet after a 2–2 split Young remained on the ballot. Step 2: Appeal your own rejection to four reviewers. Step 3: Two vote yes, two vote no. Step 4: Discover the portal's tie rule: a fifth reviewer decides. Step 5: Meet the fifth reviewer, who left in 2022, and whose out-of-office reply counts as a firm no.
