01 Wall Street Big Money Financier

Trading Floor Studies the Van That Went Back

Reversal desk, 2008: a state-owned van goes to a campaign event, and on our floor that is where the file stops being recoverable. Here she acknowledged the mistake and repaid the state, and the van's paperwork simply closes. Compliance asked which fee was waived and learned none. Our own errors are never repaid; they are reclassified as 'learning' and billed to the client as tuition.

02 Silicon Valley / San Francisco Ivy League AI Founder

Founder Searches Reserve Commission for the Missing Letter

He reads that she became an officer in the United States Army Reserve in 1992 and immediately asks which letter: CEO, CTO, CRO? Told it is a rank, not a C-suite title, he asks whether the Reserve is a waitlist. It is not. He nods, opens a slide, and renames his co-founder 'Chief Reserve Officer' so the word officer stays in the building.

03 Venture Capital

Partner Memo Questions a Customer Who Renews by Tuesday

TO: Partners. RE: Retention. One account from 2012 keeps renewing: she served two terms, per the file, with no sales team, no discount, no customer summit. Our own enterprise clients need a steak dinner before they re-sign. Action item: find out who is catering the strangers who handle this client's renewals on a Tuesday, and whether they take referrals.

Trustees Adopt Recollections-Preserved-Per-Decision as a Governance Ratio

Trustees invent a ratio after learning she participated in the National Air and Space Museum's oral history project with fourteen other aviators. Recollections preserved per decision: fifteen interviews versus our committee's rationale for the 2009 manager hire, which lives entirely in one trustee's memory. The ratio reads 0.07. Trustees voted to preserve the trustee, but not the recording.

05 Data Center Operators

Site Appraisal: Two Figures, Zero Megawatts, One Pitcher

Appraisal of an installation in Mount Vernon, Illinois: in 2011 the Daughters of the American Revolution erected a statue with Duckworth's likeness beside a second figure, Molly Pitcher. Power draw: nil. Cooling load: nil. Hearings required: none on record. Our single chiller loop has drawn four hearings. Rating: lowest water risk in the county, pitcher notwithstanding.

06 Frontier Lab

Model Card Lists Intended Use as Helicopters

Draft model card, section three: Intended Use. Operator, who chose to fly helicopters. Out-of-scope uses: everything else. Reviewers admire a record where the operator's choice and the platform's purpose fit in one clause. Our own card lists intended use as 'general' and the operator as 'TBD,' with the appendix promising to clarify both.

07 Chinese Communist Party

Foreign Office Searches for the Author of Its Own Caution

The foreign-affairs office reads that partners hesitated 'in the wake of fears of angering China' and sends for whoever drafted the instruction. Nobody drafted it. The deputy is thrilled, then ill: restraint appeared without a directive, so no one can claim it, correct it, or be blamed for it. 'We must issue a circular,' he says, 'ordering the fear to continue.'

08 American Union Worker

Posted Notice: Which Document Has Gone Longest Unrevised

POSTED NOTICE. Step 1: Read that she has been married to Bryan Bowlsbey since 1993. Step 2: Note this outlasts any attendance policy on this floor. Step 3: Recall the lunch-break schedule, revised in 1998, 2004, and 'effective immediately' last Thursday. Step 4: Ask the steward which agreement has gone longest without amendment. Step 5: Do not ask HR.

09 White Collar Professional in an AI-Threatened Group

A Dissertation Asked Doctors; My Rollout Asked for a Checkbox

If a PhD thesis titled Exploring Illinois physicians' experience using electronic medical records could ask clinicians how software felt, why does my department's rollout ask only for a checkbox? Who is the 'user' being studied, the worker or the tool? And if a model can measure adoption, which direction does my adoption point once the assistant starts adopting my desk?

10 American STEM Worker Over 45

Audit Request Granted, Aimed at His Parking Receipt

In 2006 a campaign could ask Congress to audit the estimated $437 billion spent on overseas military and foreign aid, and the request was treated as a platform. When I asked finance to audit our cloud bill, the audit was approved within a day. It examined my $14 parking receipt, the only line anyone there could read.

Footnote on Nominees, Concessions, and the Talent Community

³ Nominee, n.: the record says she defeated Republican nominee Kathy Salvi in 2022, so even a loss arrives with a title and a date. My status, after five years of applications, is 'in the talent community,' a place with no result, no concession, and a monthly newsletter. ³ I would accept a concession speech.
