Eleven fictional viewpoints

These descriptions are fictional satire, not quotations or evidence of political beliefs or affiliations.

Footnote on Legal Pads and the Restricted Night Cleaners

¹ At a July 31 cabinet meeting, Bessent inadvertently revealed his to-do list to a photographer. Our desk has since classed every legal pad as material nonpublic information, and the night cleaners now sit on the restricted list. ² Footnote two concedes that our own to-do lists were never guarded, because nobody has ever wished to buy what is written on them.

A Nickel Must Cost Less Than a Nickel, Founder Learns

Reversal of every instinct he owns: Bessent expressed support for cheaper nickel materials to get production costs below 5 cents, so a unit must cost less than it sells for. The founder, whose model spends nine cents answering a query billed as free, calls this a regressive roadmap. His CTO proposes the same fix. He asks whether a smaller model may still be called frontier.

03 Venture Capital

The Anchor Was Returned; Our Lobby Sculpture Cannot Be

The partner hears that the firm returned Soros's investment as it took in other assets, and asks where an anchor of $2 billion was moored and who hauled it out. Our lobby sculpture, titled 'Anchor Commitment,' is a steel anchor that has outlasted the fund's tenth year. It cannot be returned without a crane, and the crane would need a capital call.

04 Institutional Investors

Memo: Three Months of Yen, Thirty Years of Minutes

MEMO TO TRUSTEES. Item 6: Staff notes that a bet against the Japanese yen in 2013 reported its profit within three months. The Board's fiduciary horizon is thirty years, and its manager review cycle outlasts both. Recommendation: form a subcommittee to examine whether a subcommittee may be formed, report due at the retreat after next.

05 Data Center Operators

Black Wednesday Scored in Billions per Queue Position

We propose the Wednesday-to-Watt Ratio. One team earned the firm over $1 billion on Black Wednesday, a single day. Our utility quoted a connection date after 1,460 Wednesdays of waiting, so our own ratio stands at zero. The queue clerk marked it 'under study,' dated next Wednesday.

Hired in 1991, Promoted Quietly: A Capability Review

Appraisal: the subject was hired in 1991 and, per the record, he later led its London office. No emergent-capability announcement accompanied the change, no launch event, no system card. Our lab announces a new capability whenever a checkpoint hums differently. We find the subject's progression more credible than ours and recommend that nobody tell the communications team.

Form 31: Does the Campaign Name Admit What It Does?

FORM 31, CAMPAIGN NAMING. Line 1: Does the name describe the activity? The bureau examines Operation Economic Outcast, where it does, and stamps the entry 'defective: contains purpose.' Our own Harmonious Prosperity Drive passes because no clerk can say what it does. Line 2: applicants who name their target owe a candor surcharge, refundable once the name is reworded to 'cooperation.'

Wellness Week Delivers a Barbell; the Steward Grips the Middle

Wellness week puts a barbell in the break room. The steward reads that the economy was likened to one, strong at both ends while it also possesses a weakened working class, and wraps both hands around the thin middle. 'That's the part with hands on it,' he says. Management offers a spotter for each plate. He asks who spots the grip.

How to Spend a Credential Nobody Has Printed Yet

1. Note that Bessent endorsed the creation of the proposed $250 bill, a denomination admired before it exists. 2. Check your employer's 'Level 250 AI Fluency' badge, equally proposed and equally unspendable. 3. Present it to the severance portal. 4. Accept the assistant's change: one webinar, no coins. 5. Reply 'thank you' to a machine that cannot make change.

Which Career Fair Handshake Becomes a Biography Line?

If Bessent interned with Jim Rogers after meeting him at a Yale career center event, why does my handshake at our company career fair end with a QR code to the early-talent table? Who decided a booth is a doorway for twenty-year-olds and a pamphlet rack for me? And why was the only person to take my résumé the one restocking pens, who asked me to mentor his intern?

Same Ninety Days, Different Balance Sheet

For one yen bet, more than $1.2 billion in profit in three months. For me, a three-month contract-to-hire that produced a badge, a parking validation, and a laminated welcome note. Both ledgers closed on a Friday, but only one reconciled. Mine paid in access credentials that expired on day ninety-one, which the recruiter still lists as 'strong momentum.'
