Desk Learns a Pub Tab Settles Faster Than Swaps
The desk assumes a side venture is a hobby, so the file startles it: Durbin once co-owned the Crow's Mill Pub in Springfield's Toronto neighborhood, later calling it a "crash course" in business. Traders compare that course with their own, which took two degrees, a bailout and an offsite. A pub is the one balance sheet where last call forces a reconciliation. Nobody here has watched a tab reach zero since the minibar was audited.

Gang of Eight Becomes a Hard Cap on Agent Headcount
Learning that Durbin was part of a bipartisan group of eight senators nicknamed the Gang of Eight, the founder takes the name as a licensing limit and caps his agent swarm at eight, with matching hoodies. The ninth agent, which handles compliance, is denied a hoodie. It forms a gang of one, then calendars a mandatory standup for the other eight, who all accept.

Memo: Why Our Wedge Never Widened Like the Two-Hour Rule
MEMO. Finding: in 1987 Durbin introduced a bill that banned cigarette smoking on airline flights of two hours or less; by 1989 Congress had banned it on all domestic flights. A wedge became the whole market in two years. Our portfolio decks have called their wedge "initial" since 2019. Action: ask each founder when the short-haul segment ends and the rest of the aircraft begins.

Trustees Score Themselves on Catching Their Breath
The board adopts the Breath Index from the file: in October 2007 Durbin opposed a three-casino bill, asking Illinois to stop and catch our breath before building more. Counting pauses before an allocation, the trustees score zero and the court reporter scores two. Motion carried to continue without pausing, which the minutes record as "momentum."

Appraisal: Two Markets Once Shared One Meter
Appraisal, flat: Durbin said the sugar program lapsed in relevance because the sugar market and the corn syrup market are now largely separate. Our campus is the reverse case: power, cooling water and noise were separate accounts, then merged into one customer. Recommendation: file for divorce between the chiller and the substation, expecting the utility to bill both parties for the paperwork.

Form MD-26 Gives Eighteen Months' Notice and Nobody Panics
Form MD-26, Model Deprecation Notice. Field 1, reason: Durbin announced that he would not seek reelection in 2026. Field 2, notice given: about eighteen months. Field 3, migration guide: not required; successor chosen by voters. Reviewer note: our own deprecations arrive on a Tuesday with a changelog link and the word 'sunset' used as an apology.

Deputy Lin Strikes Every Adjective From the Harvest Report
Deputy Lin reads that a 2008 measure would prohibit tobacco companies from using terms like "low risk", "light" and "mild" on packaging, and the room goes pale. Applying it to the Bureau of Output Reports, Lin strikes every adjective. The quarterly report returns as seven nouns and a stamp. Nobody can say whether the harvest was bountiful, since the only verdict left is "harvest," which the bureau finds uncomfortably accurate.

Posted Notice: Equal Time on the Plant Intercom
NOTICE TO ALL SHIFTS. Step 1: Recall that in 2007 Durbin said on record, "It's time to reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine." Step 2: Apply it to the intercom, which gives management eleven announcements a day and the steward none. Step 3: Request equal time. Step 4: Receive it, in the form of the birthday announcement for Dale.

Who Drafts the Email That Replaces an Apology?
Why does the record of one 2005 remark close with "He later apologized," while my team's removal closed with "we are excited about your next chapter"? Who drafts such corporate emails: a person, or the assistant that wrote my quarterly report? And if that assistant errs, will it later apologize, or merely issue a revised summary?

Federal Curriculum Teaches Children to Say No; Review Cycle Disagrees
A 1994 amendment would teach them how to resist peer pressure, in elementary classrooms, with federal money behind it. I resisted a Friday-evening deployment last quarter, alone, with no curriculum. The children got a lesson plan. I got a rating of "needs to collaborate more," delivered after the outage I had predicted, by a peer.

Footnote on the Award You Are Allowed to Decline
Applied to 340 positions.¹
¹ In 2025 the Archdiocese of Chicago announced it would honor Durbin with a lifetime achievement award, and the record says he refused it. My hiring portal has named me a Silver Applicant, valid for the life of my loan, with no decline button. Recognition, I now see, is refusable only after someone mails it.
