Eleven fictional viewpoints

These descriptions are fictional satire, not quotations or evidence of political beliefs or affiliations.

01 Wall Street Big Money Financier

Desk Appraises One Unrestated Diploma, Recommends Holding

Appraisal of a single credential: she earned an MBA from DePaul University in 1999, with international finance and marketing attached. No restatement, no adjusted figure, no pro forma version of the diploma. The desk notes it has not held anything this unrevised for twenty-seven years. Recommendation: hold, and stop asking the diploma for guidance.

02 Silicon Valley / San Francisco Ivy League AI Founder

Collateral Form Rejects 'Vibes' in the Acreage Field

Form C-9, Tuition Collateral, asks for the pledged asset. Loeffler financed graduate school by mortgaging land inherited from her grandparents, and the founder studies the field marked 'Acres.' His own pledge is a domain name, eleven pitch decks and an unreleased model. The form asks for soil type. He writes 'proprietary,' and the clerk circles it as a drought.

03 Venture Capital

Sixteen Years Is Not a Hockey Stick, Partner Notes

"Investor relations in 2002," the associate says, slide still dark. "Then in 2018 she became CEO of Bakkt." The partner frowns: where is the hockey stick? The associate points to the calendar. Sixteen years, one desk to the corner office. The partner asks whether that can be rounded to eighteen months for the LP letter.

04 Institutional Investors

Trustee Instruction 6: Close the Ledger on Closed Items

Trustee Instruction 6: when a complaint ends, as the Senate Ethics Committee dismissed the complaint against her in June 2020, record the dismissal in the same ledger as the complaint. Do not, as this committee does, leave items open for a decade to be reviewed 'in light of developments.' Initial beside the oldest open item and try to recall what it was.

Is a Fifteen-Thousand-Square-Foot Mansion Secretly a Small Hall?

Is a 15,000-square-foot (1,400 m) estate a home, or a data hall wearing draperies? Who sized its chilled-water loop, and did the county demand a hearing on the foyer's airflow? The record adds four other homes and a condo, so which of them hums at night? And why did our one modest annex need a noise study when nobody has ever asked a staircase to justify its fans?

06 Frontier Lab

Our Intent to Release Has Better Safeguards Than Theirs

Our lab treats 'intent' as a hazardous milestone: red-teaming, a forty-page model card, a review board. Trump announced his intent to nominate her on December 4, 2024, and she was confirmed eleven weeks later. We are more cautious by three orders of magnitude, and, to be fair, have confirmed nothing.

07 Chinese Communist Party

Footnote Objects to an Exchange With Two Continents

¹ In 2002 she joined Intercontinental Exchange, a name the terminology committee admires: two continents, one noun, no five-year plan. Bureau staff note that their own exchanges are filed as 'coordinated allocation' and their continents as 'external conditions.' The footnote recommends the firm rename itself, then withdraws the recommendation, along with itself, for lack of a footnote of its own.

08 American Union Worker

One Sentence Taped Above the Time Clock

The steward tapes one sentence above the time clock: Raphael Warnock won the January 5, 2021 runoff election, and Loeffler conceded on January 7. Two parties, one outcome, no clarifying side letter. Members compare it with the last contract, whose losing side 'withdrew in principle' and kept reinterpreting for a year. Someone asks whether the sentence has an expiry clause.

Leadership Attends Every Game; the Analyst Gets a Recap

The new presence policy cites Loeffler's habit of arranging her travel schedule to attend all games. The analyst takes it literally and asks which games she may attend. The summarizer already attends every meeting for her, including the Thursday review of her own role. She is welcome to read the recap, which it also attended.

Memo: Pending Acquisition Exempts Everything Except Billing

MEMO. Re: Exemption 14. Effective today, any obligation may be declined for the reason that Loeffler passed on the race because of Intercontinental Exchange's pending acquisition. Managers may defer reviews, handoffs and backfills accordingly. The engineer is asked to list, in his spare time, which duties are exempt. The billing job, which is not pending, runs at 2 a.m. and has not seen the memo.

The Test Drive Ratio: Interview Rounds Per Set of Keys

I propose the Test Drive Ratio: interview rounds divided by keys received. After college, Loeffler worked for Toyota as a district account manager, and I picture the dealer's version, fifteen minutes around the block, then paperwork. My last posting required five rounds, a take-home build and a lunch. Ratio: infinity, because the keys were never in the car.
