Desk Memo Proposes Two Hats Per Lanyard

MEMO TO ALL DESKS: On February 7, 2025, a budget director became acting director of the consumer bureau as well, a second badge added to his first. We read this as lanyard thrift. Effective Monday, the head of compliance will also serve as acting head of trade sales, saving one desk and one conscience. Direct objections to compliance, who will answer from the other office.

Syllable Burn Rate Exposes Founder's Naming Budget

Our new Syllable Burn metric notes that Needham established Heritage Action for America in 2010 with Vought, spending ten syllables on a name. Our naming budget is two. Flyyr, our company, paid an agency four months to shave a vowel and still has no product. By this measure the older organization outperformed us on letterhead, and we outperformed it on domain availability.

Naval Board Seat Granted by Tweet, Diligence Pending

Diligence note: asked to resign from the Naval Academy's board of visitors, Vought declined, arguing he had been appointed to a three-year term on Twitter. Enforceability: untested. Our own side letters live in a Slack thread and one thumbs-up, so we find the precedent encouraging. Recommendation: pass on the board seat, then ask counsel whether our carry was also granted by emoji.

Form HP-7: Managers Pledge Gentle Enforcement of Themselves

Form HP-7, Manager Humility Addendum. Item 1: check here if your firm will agree to seek less vigorous enforcement of our own investment guidelines. Item 2: explain why the committee already receives this pledge, unsigned, every year. Item 3: confirm that fees remain vigorously enforced. Item 4: do not ask who enforces Item 3.

Hall B Closes for a Week, Meter Disagrees

Dev read that an acting director closed its headquarters for the coming week, so he taped a sign to Hall B. The chillers kept humming, the badge reader kept beeping, and the meter logged its busiest afternoon. The county inspector arrived to verify the closure, was refused entry because the building was closed, and cited it for obstruction. The sign alone had complied.

Model Card Style Guide, Section Four: Find the Author

Step 1: Read how sources describe Vought as an architect of Project 2025. Note one hedge, one noun, and a person at the end. Step 2: Read our draft: 'capabilities emerged during training.' Step 3: Locate the architect in that sentence. Step 4: Do not show Step 3 to Legal, who will ask whether 'emerged' has been red-teamed.

Why Was the Memo Clarified Only After the Questions?

Why was a grant-pause memo released without the advisement of advisers, and its scope explained only once someone asked? Who in our bureau would dare issue first and clarify second? And if a clarification must follow questioning, which circular clarifies the clarification, and may the advisers who were not advised be asked to draft it?

Same Arithmetic, Different Word for the Line

The Senate's 53–47 vote along party lines in February 2025 was called an orderly confirmation. When forty-seven of our hundred voted the way the steward suggested, management's memo called it 'coordination' and requested a neutral facilitator. Same arithmetic, same discipline. One result gets a swearing-in; the other gets a facilitator with a lanyard and a laminated ground rule about eye contact.

Footnote Two: My Box Now Hangs From a Dotted Line

Footnote 1: agencies were told to modify their organizational charts. Ours was modified by software that redraws lines faster than anyone can be told. Footnote 2: my box now hangs below a dotted line to a box labeled 'Human Oversight (Ceremonial)'. Footnote 3: the dotted line has since been promoted, and I am a footnote to it.

Willing to Drop Out: Devotion Here, Disengagement There

When Gramm offered a promotion, Vought said that he was willing to drop out of night law classes, which the biography calls devotion. I told my director I was willing to drop out of my recertification course for the lead role. HR called it 'a signal' and asked what else I'd drop. Then they dropped my on-call stipend.

Reading Law School as a School of Laws

A school of law, I assumed, teaches laws, so after reading about George Washington University Law School and a 2004 degree, I audited my own: Ohm's, Kirchhoff's, Hooke's. Only Ohm's still applies to my search. Voltage is my effort, current is my applications, and resistance is whoever reads 'bachelor's, state school' and hums politely before closing the tab.
