Markwayne Mullin was born on July 26, 1977, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mullin is a member of the Cherokee Nation. In 1997, Mullin took control of his family's plumbing business, Mullin Plumbing.
In December 2021, Mullin sold his businesses to CenterOak Partners, a private equity firm. Mullin was the U.S. representative for Oklahoma's second congressional district from 2013 to 2023. In 2012, Mullin defeated the Democratic candidate Rob Wallace in the general election on November 6.
Mullin won the 2022 special election for the Senate seat of Jim Inhofe. Mullin took office as a senator on January 3, 2023. On March 5, 2026, President Donald Trump fired Kristi Noem and nominated Mullin as secretary of homeland security.
The Senate confirmed Mullin in a 54–45 vote. Attorney General Pam Bondi swore in Mullin on March 24, 2026. Mullin is the first member of the Cherokee Nation to serve in the U.S. Cabinet.
