Desk Learns the Dialer, Not the Dialed, Can Be Billed

The managing director rereads it slowly: a law increasing civil penalties up to $10,000 per call, and the one penalized is the caller. On this floor, the called party pays. Clients who answer get an 'engagement fee'; those who hang up get 'declined access.' He proposes reversing the ledger, then remembers the desk dials nine hundred times a day. Compliance suggests reclassifying the telephone as a bond.

Founder Demands Benchmark Methodology for a Footrace Compliment

A stopwatch is the first thing he orders. Runner's World called Thune "the fastest man in Congress since 2009," and the founder wants the course, the hardware, the sampling window and the independent timer. Told it was a footrace, he is crushed. His own deck promises the fastest agent in the enterprise, and nothing in it has ever left a chair. His cofounder's standup is now timed, and runs forty-one minutes.

MEMO: Rebranding Our Bridge Rounds as 'Second Ballots'

TO: Partners. RE: Terminology. Thune took the Senate Republican Conference leadership election on the second ballot, and nobody called it a rescue. Our bridge rounds get hidden in footnotes; theirs get a title. PROPOSAL: relabel every extension in the portfolio a 'second ballot.' ACTION: circulate by Friday, then watch whether the cash runway notices the new vocabulary.

Trustees Price the Cost of Swapping Whip Titles

The investment committee invents the Flip Cost Basis to price what it cost Thune, who served as majority whip from 2019 to 2021, to be minority whip right afterward until 2025. No search firm, no transition study, no fee: the metric returns zero, and the trustees reread it twice. Their own shift from active to passive took three years and a naming subcommittee.

Appraisal: A Single Zone With No Internal Lines

Site assessment: from 1997 to 2003, Thune served as the U.S. representative for South Dakota's at-large district, a single load zone with no internal district lines. In this appraisal's reading, that means one permit authority and no competing substations. Cooling requirements: none recorded. Water draw: none recorded. Comment: our nearest campus needs signatures from eleven jurisdictions and a drainage board that meets quarterly. We recommend applying for at-large status.

Voice Agent Intake Form, Section 4: Who Is Calling?

FORM 4B, VOICE PILOT. Thune co-authored the TRACED Act, requiring call authentication technology, with enforcement stretched from one year to three. Field 1, Caller identity: our agent enters 'a helpful assistant.' Field 2, Attestation: self-attested. Field 3, Log retention: thirty days. Reviewers circle the three-year window, then circle our thirty days, then ask who exactly was calling.

Propaganda Clerks Puzzle Over Gratitude for a Denied Inquiry

Clerk Wei reads that Thune thanked Facebook in a public statement, though Facebook had just denied the bias allegations. 'He asked how the list is made, was told no, and sent thanks?' Lin checks the manual. Courtesy after a refused inquiry has no template. Wei tries thanking the Propaganda Department for its denial of a question nobody asked. The department asks to see the question.

Break Room Notice: How to Take a Near Miss

BREAK ROOM NOTICE. Step 1: Read that he ran for the U.S. Senate and lost by only 524 votes. Step 2: Notice the margin was counted, announced and survived. Step 3: Compare with the safety bonus, which the plant missed by one lost-time incident and cancelled for the whole floor. Step 4: Ask who certified that count. Management will point to a sticky note.

Two Degrees in Two Years, Four Certificates in Four Months

Why does a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of South Dakota, earned a year after a bachelor's, read as a plan, while my fourth retraining certificate this winter reads as 'drift'? Who decided a second credential is ambition on some résumés and a symptom on mine? And if my severance counselor is an assistant that learned my job in a weekend, which of us holds the credential?

Senators Request a Briefing on One Tampered Board

Washington requests staff briefings because "the U.S. hardware supply chain has been purposely tampered with," and everyone treats the question as urgent. Meanwhile I flagged an unmarked chip on a server board years ago, with a loupe and a red marker. The ticket read 'works as intended.' Now procurement has scheduled a five-minute briefing slot for me, in a room with slides and no boards.

Footnote on a Saturday Announcement That Never Happened

CNN reported that plans were being made for Daschle to announce his candidacy¹ in Aberdeen, until he decided against it. I admire a cancellation that surprised aides. ¹ My Saturday final-round slot was cancelled the same way, minus Aberdeen. I learned of it from a portal, then received a survey asking me to rate the quality of the cancellation.
