Analyst Manual: Never Call It a Path
Instruction for new analysts: when a résumé says he began his career at Boston Consulting Group and later worked in private equity, do not call it a path. Call it a sequence. Paths imply a destination; sequences imply a fee schedule. Then ask your managing director which of the two words is engraved on the office plaques, and wait for the fee schedule to answer.

Founder Demands the Origin Story Ledger
When Trump nominated Hagerty as ambassador to Japan on March 27, 2017, did anyone ask for a demo day first? Why does my own network produce only a ring light and a newsletter? And if one nomination can place a person across the Pacific, which of my warm intros is supposed to do that, and who holds the cap table on my airfare?

Six Boards, Zero Verticals, One Honest List
Partner memo: he served on the board of CyMed, NEW Customer Services, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Ryman Hospitality and more, which in our fictional reading makes him a generalist who says so. Our decks promise 'deep vertical focus,' yet each partner sits on boards from three unrelated verticals. We call this 'thematic adjacency.' His roster never needed a word for it. We have a trademark.

Footnote 22: The Port, the Ship, and the Working Group
*Footnote 22. The Defending American Property Abroad Act would let agencies investigate and prohibit vessels from entering a U.S. port. Trustees note our own overseas port holding has a seizure remedy too: a strongly worded letter, to be sent once a working group defines 'seize.' The ship, meanwhile, remains docked in the minutes.

The Word 'Community' Sits in the Title, Not the Hearing
In our files, 'community' arrives as a hearing-room opponent holding a sign about cooling water. Reverse the grammar: from 2011 to 2014, Hagerty served as commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, where the word sat in the department's own title beside 'economic.' We have asked whether it can be moved onto our permit applications, minus the sign.

Interpretability Team Hunts the Steering Committee's Steering Vector
Interpretability read that Hagerty founded and led the Nashville MLS Steering Committee and booked a sprint to find its steering vector. They found a coalition seeking a soccer franchise. Undeterred, they steered the model toward 'coalition.' It now answers every query with an expansion-market bid, a stadium rendering, and a request to be named the first of two.

Circular 7: The Runner-Up Remains in the Record
Circular 7: foreign press says the subject was reportedly also under consideration for United States Trade Representative, and the post went to Robert Lighthizer. Shortlists there are published, and the runner-up survives in print. Here, a shortlisted loser is retouched out of the group photograph. Proposal: house the omitted names in a Ministry of Almosts, and classify its membership.

Safety Board Converts a Confirmation Vote to Near-Misses
The hall's safety board scores everything in near-misses per shift. The Senate confirmed him on July 13, 2017, 86 to 12, which the board converts to twelve near-misses per eighty-six shifts: a write-up, a toolbox talk, and a laminated sign. Ruling: acceptable for a legislature. On our floor the same ratio earns a stand-down and a very quiet cafeteria.

Appraisal: Marisol Stalled the Rollout, Rated Irreplaceable
Marisol's sole notable contribution this year: she demanded the vendor contract be read aloud before the rollout vote. Compare the senator who, in August 2021, used a procedural maneuver to grind the final vote on a spending bill to a halt. Rating: exceeds expectations. The vendor has since offered to automate her method as a Stall module, which shipped instantly and therefore failed.

Form SP-3: Delegate for a Sponsor Who Withdrew

Box 4: Tick 'Remove name' or 'Leave on ballot.' The second is pre-ticked.

Career Fair Recruiter Distinguishes Investments From Openings
At the career fair, Dev asks the tire-company recruiter about entry-level openings. She explains that Tennessee's old development chief once played a role in investments by Bridgestone, and an investment, she says, is a different noun from an opening. She hands him a tire-shaped stress ball. 'Squeeze it,' she says. 'That's the position.'
